He was a French painter and draughtsman. He was noted for his talent for rendering pictorial portraits. He also produced a number of genre scenes, which depicted in great detail the lifestyle of the middle classes in France in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. In addition, his style was influenced by 18th-century Netherlandish Baroque painting by painters such as Gabriël Metsu, Willem van Mieris and Gerard ter Borch.
