He was an Italian Baroque painter and engraver who belonged to the Roman-Bolognese classicism movement. He is the most famous member of the Carracci dynasty of painters. He is considered the rival of Caravaggio.
Together with his elder brother Agostino and his cousin Ludovico, he opened a painting workshop, the School of the Eclectics, whose main aim was to renew painting, which they believed had degenerated during Mannerism and which they also saw as endangered by Caravaggio’s naturalism.
