He was one of the most renowned engravers of the generation after Marcantonio Raimondi. Like Raimondi, he is primarily known for his work in reproduction engraving. Through his plates he disseminated the art of Michelangelo, Raffaello Sanzio, Giulio Romano and other painters of the period.
