Torres-García, Joaquín (1874-1949)

38 obras

Born in Uruguay, the family moved to Spain in 1891. He entered the Escuela de Bellas Artes in Barcelona, but within two years he abandoned the academic way of learning for a more self-taught path. He was in contact with all the artists in Barcelona at the time and by 1905 he was already a painter and muralist of recognised talent. In the following years the critics would speak of him as one of the most significant representatives of Noucentisme. In the 1920s he spent a long period in New York, returned to Europe at the end of the decade and by 1934 the artist decided to return to Uruguay. He lived there until his death, dedicated to introducing the European avant-garde and developing his universal constructivism through the foundation of the Asociación de Arte Constructivo and the Taller Torres-García.
