Van Swanevelt, Herman (1603/4-1655)

Dutch painter and engraver, considered a master of the idealised Italianate landscape. In his youth he visited Paris and later travelled to Rome, where he spent a long period of his life before moving permanently to Paris. His landscapes became highly appreciated. He received numerous commissions from the Vatican and from the leading families of the nobility. In Paris he changed his circle of clients and, consequently, his style. His work as an engraver is also important; 116 plates have been catalogued. In 1650 he was granted a privilege to publish engravings, after which he practically relegated painting in favour of etching.
