He was a Flemish painter, draughtsman and humanist. He spent five years in Italy (1775-1780) and on his return to the Netherlands was highly respected as a master painter. His most famous pupil is Peter Paul Rubens. As a scholarly painter, he produced numerous allegorical drawings, which make Otto van Veen the leading emblemist of his time.
