German engraver. He began his training in Munich with Amigoni, whom he accompanied on his travels around Italy for his training. After several years in Bologna he joined his master in London, who encouraged him to devote himself entirely to engraving, and there they founded a printmaking workshop. In Paris he perfected his technique by combining etching and engraving. He settled permanently in Venice. He took in young engravers who specialised in reproducing pictorial works by means of engraving, applying the aforementioned technique initiated in France by Cars and introduced by him in Venice.

In addition to the hundreds of plates produced in his intaglio by his own hand or under his direction, he collaborated in other important intaglio enterprises, such as the series Delle Antiche Statue Greche e Romane, Le Pitture di Pellegrino Tibaldi e Niccolò Abati.
