Popular engraver; he worked as a wood engraver in the town of Épinal for the Pellerin publishing house, probably from the age of twelve or thirteen. He was the company’s principal engraver and produced around two hundred wood engravings (a tenth of the company’s output). He left Pellerin to join the rival firm Pinot & Sagaire in 1860, but died shortly afterwards.
