Hogarth, William (1697-1764)

He is the great master of social and political satire. In his youth he was apprenticed to the engraver Ellis Gamble at Leicester Fields, where he learned to engrave. In April 1720, Hogarth established himself as a freelance engraver, first engraving minor works such as coats of arms and shop bills, as well as illustrations for books.
After a few first years as a second-level engraver and designer, Hogarth decided to make the leap to the category of painter, but it was not easy for him. At that time, the great artistic commissions in London were monopolized by foreign artists, within a rococo and bombastic style that Hogarth considered artificial. His emergence as a renowned artist can be dated to the 1730s, when he turned to his satirical themes.
