Von Mechel, Christian (1737-1817)

He came from a family of craftsmen in Basel. He trained as an engraver in Hausburg, Nuremberg and Paris, but found his place in the art world as a purveyor of works. Joseph II hired him to convert the Habsburg private collection into one available for public display, moving the collection to the Belvedere Palace.
