Elegant woman

JOSÉ CAMARÓN BONANAT (1731-1803)

Spain, 18th century.

Pen and ink wash on laid paper.

Distinguished woman dressed in a bodice with a wide neckline, very tight to the body and highlighting the waist, with sleeves reaching to the elbow. The wide-flared black skirt, which highlights the narrowness of the waist, is adorned at the bottom by rich embroidery, also in black. The voluminous wig is hidden by the subtle mantilla edged with a black ribbon from which a lace flounce emerges. The outfit is complemented by a great profusion of jewellery, among which the girandole earrings, the choker, the ribbon bracelets with miniatures or cameos and the rings stand out. From the waist and by chains hang watches and different accessories. The lady wears curved-heeled shoes with a narrow point decorated with buckles. As an accessory, she holds a closed fan in her right hand, with which she points to her face.
