JOAQUÍN TORRES-GARCÍA (1874-1949)
A work of undoubted crudeness in which the artist shows the interior of this internment centre for women with behavioural problems (the Salpetriére). The blue colours and the sordid atmosphere bear resemblances to Picasso’s blue period.
Catalonia, circa 1898.
Charcoal and wash on vellum paper.
Signed: J. Torras G on the right.
Slight tear in the paper on the right.
