JOSEP ARRAU I BARBA (1802-1872)
Catalonia, mid-19th century.
Pen and pencil on laid paper.
Drawing of a scene that is difficult to identify. A couple, dressed in the style of the 17th-18th centuries, are placed before a religious scene: Christ, accompanied by a guest, is at a banquet, perhaps in Lazarus’ house?
The artist was, among many other things, a professor at the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona. He was influenced by Pere Pau Muntaña and Damià Campeny, and represents the pre-romantic side of Llotja, prior to the influence of Ramón Martí Alsina.
Slight oxidation on the paper.
