Woman and Moon

6 October, 2019 - 7 February, 2020

Looked at with the eyes of an astronomer, the Moon is an exceptional celestial object. Firstly because it is the largest satellite in relation to the size of its planet in our solar system. Secondly, because it is the only satellite of the Earth when it is normal for planets to have many or none. This could lead astronomers to consider the Earth-Moon pair as a double planetary system, but the difference in mass between both planets places the gravitational barycenter inside our planet, so the orbit is roughly that of a satellite with respect to its planet.

But beyond its astronomical value, the Moon, due to its undeniable prominence in the night sky, has been the repository of enormous symbolic baggage. The Moon, with its orbital movements, its cyclical phases, its precise rhythms, its influence on the tides and its faint helping light, became an early symbol of transformation and natural cycles, of the measurement of time, of life with his death and the hope of a resurrection.

This immaterial legacy has given rise to a rich imaginary with countless beliefs, legends and superstitions about the lunar influence on our spirits. Among these associations, those that point to the intimate link between the Moon and the feminine condition stand out for their persistence and uniqueness.

This correspondence has been exploited not only by religious and clairvoyants, but also by poets and artists, when constructing a symbolic universe where the beautiful and sensual intermingle with the hidden and the terrible. This is how, over time, woman and Moon have woven an intimate alliance that safeguards their charm and also their mystery.
