JOSÉ GUTIÉRREZ SOLANA (1886-1945)

Print by José Gutiérrez Solana from Madrid, a painter, engraver and lithographer who was one of the best who captured the appearance of Black Spain, at the beginning of the 20th century. The etching was done by the artist between 1932-1933 but was first published in 1946, eight months after his death.

This work, along with others (forming a total of 19), was edited by Peña Pineda, then owner of the plates and stamped by Adolfo Rupérez. The printing was short, 25 copies numbered and sealed in dry, but magnificently stamped. The first two copies, numbered 1 (ours) and 2, were printed on old Japan paper; three more were made on Imperial Japan (numbers 3, 4 and 5); finally, 20 copies, from 6 to 25, on tina paper.

Signed in plate at the bottom left corner: J. Solana. Print 1/25. These works were exhibited at the Galería Estilo de Madrid (from February 25th to March 9th, 1946).
